About the language

Vietnamese belongs to austroasijským languages. It is the official language in Vietnam and speaks her minority scattered abroad. Almost half of the vocabulary consists of words borrowed from Chinese. The basic building block is the syllable which stands alone, like words in European languages. Each syllable is pronounced with a certain tone, which distinguishes its importance. The standard language differentiates between 6 tones. Compared to the words of the original Vietnamese vocabulary words are of Chinese origin mainly bisyllabic. Vietnamese does not bend, grammatical features such as a fall, the number or time expressed using word order and auxiliary slůvek. Many words consists in pairs which carry new meanings. Vietnamese is a tonal, analytic language is not out of step with the Asian average, all the more surprising that it is written in Latin characters. Latin came to Vietnam together with European missionaries in the 17th century.
